Year 2 Spelling Words

UK National Curriculum Spelling List

125 essential words for 6-7 year olds

🎭

Homophones Confusion

Year 2 children (ages 6-7) start encountering words that sound the same but are spelled differently - like 'there/their/they're' or 'to/too/two'. This is genuinely confusing for young minds!

🤫

Silent Letters

Words with silent letters (like 'knee', 'write', 'lamb') don't make sense to 6-7 year olds. Why write a letter you can't hear? These exceptions frustrate logical young thinkers.

Suffix Rules

Adding endings like '-ed', '-ing', or '-er' involves rules about doubling letters or dropping 'e'. For Year 2 learners, remembering when to double and when not to feels overwhelming.

About Year 2 Spelling

Year 2 (ages 6-7) builds on Year 1 foundations, introducing more complex spelling patterns and common exception words. Children at this stage are expected to spell many common words correctly and are beginning to learn suffixes and prefixes.

The Year 2 curriculum includes homophones (words that sound the same), contractions (like don't, can't), and words with tricky letter patterns. Many children find this challenging because the rules aren't always consistent.

Our memory tricks are especially helpful at this stage, turning confusing spelling patterns into memorable stories and visual images that make sense to young learners.
